Welcome

Welcome to my wargaming blog,
I'm Dave and live in Morpeth, Northumberland in the UK.
This may or may not be a regular thing, we'll just have to see how it goes.

I am a painter/collector of figures first and a wargamer second. My thrill in this great hobby of ours is to place that final well researched & painted unit into the cabinet. The actual gaming with the figures is an important but secondary experience, we all like to win, but it isn't the be all and end all of it, being with good friends and having fun is.
Hope you will enjoy reading this blog as much as I will writing in it.
Just to remind the visitor to scroll down the various pages and click on 'older posts' to see more.

Hey, it's the Huns Honey!

As promised more Impetus basing done, this time eight groups of 28mm Hunnic light cavalry. As you can see on the photos I've used the term Zunn to denote each unit. I know that it is a Mongol military title for 'hundreds' and rather too late for Huns (and there seem to be no record of unit termanology for them) but it's better than 'Unit 1, Unit 2' etc so what the hell.
Photos of some 'toothy' looking Huns, figures are Old Glory and Gripping Beast if I recall.

One a large enough table eight units of horse archers should p*** the enemy off!
Ostro and Visigoths next.

'Blucher' 10mm 1812 Russians.

As it's chucking it down outside and (much as I'd love to) I cannot get the garden done I thought that I may as well get the ID labels onto the completed 10mm 1812 Russians that I have painted up for Sam Mustafa's Blucher set of rules. I've fancied the type of rule system which purports to allow a large 'battle' to be fought in a reasonable amount of time on a size of table accessible to most wargamers. Haven't played the game yet but I like the look of the figures so we'll see.
10mm (or smaller) shows off the one base, one brigade look best, it just doesn't work for me with larger figures no matter what the manufacturers or rule writers say. To me when you try using 15 or 28mm figures the units still look like battalions no matter how hard you squint!
I decided to use magnetic strips on the back of the bases so that I could replace each one with the correct  brigade name depending on the OOB of whichever battle was being fought. It also allows the game scale to be dropped so that each base represents a regiment and the regimental name put on the rear of the unit. So with the newly bought printer in place I got the Opolochenie and Tuchkov's 3rd corp done to start with:

The figures are a mix of Old Glory and Magister Millitum though I would like to give Pendraken a go for the French.
A few more figures to get for the Russians and of course two corps of French but it's a start.

Getting there, Late Roman Infantry.

Another session of re-basing done, late Roman infantry this time.
Now I'm not a fantastic painter, fairly average I guess but bare in mind dear reader that these lads were first painted about fifteen to twenty years ago, well before the advent of the top quality shield transfers you can get now. So it was paint your own shields or nowt, so to be frank some of the infantry shields look to be portraying anything ranging from a scrawny spuggy to a freshly plucked turkey! Free hand painting of wildlife is as you can see beyond my meagre capabilities. But they are what they are and I am well pleased with the basing.

Eight bases of Hunnic light cavalry are based but still need flocking so it's them next.
Neal 3rd95th.blogspot. and I should get a 15mm Nap game in on the new wargames table over the next couple of weeks so I'll try to get that on here as well. Of course (unlike Neal the hippy sod) I will make sure I finish the AAR before I post the photos - pull your finger out man!

Well, it's a start, re-basing again!

It did need to be done, these lads are about 15 years old now and were originally based for Warhammer which as a skirmish/small scale action set of rules were fine in their original guise but like allot of rule writers they got greedy and had to write supplement after supplement, and of course we bought them. Truthfully you can't blame folk for making money but the original basic set seemed ok to me, later on you seemed to need to refer to the books to find out every weapon each different type of warrior may have had at hand, ridiculous.
So as I can't be arsed to move individual (or even small groups of figures) around I figured one base, one unit would do for Dave. Impetus size bases cut for me by Mick I made a start:

All will be used for the excellent To the Strongest rules written and supplied by Simon Miller here The Big Red Bat Shop
As you can see these are the cavalry, I should get going with the infantry soon, then just the Huns and Visigoths to do. Oh well!!!

Getting there

The last couple of weeks have seen me fixing various bits of IKEA furniture together, some for my good lady and some for myself, though I have managed to fit in the odd game with Neal and a visit to the club so not too bad.
I finally started painting/re-basing my 28mm late Roman/Goth/Hunnic army but more of that in a later post.
The main achievement is to finally get the war game table constructed in the painting/gaming room.

Three pieces of IKEA box storage units were put together as a base, they also serve as storage compartments for terrain.

Part of the originaltable tennis table cut to fit.

Second section fitted, I didn't cut the two sections to the same size as I figured it would give me the option of a different size game depending on what I want.

Finally with my original green hex matting rolled out on top.

Might get a game in soon!
Dave.
